Pay

North American people usually use the word “pay” to refer to the salary.:

  • Get paid: receive salary
  • Pay cheque: salary payment
  • Pay day: salary release day

“Pay” can be used as a verb and a noun, there are many related daily expressions:

  • When are we gonna get paid? When are we going to get the salary?
  • How was your pay/What’s the pay like: How is your salary?

Other words about salary

Salary is more related to the “white-collar idea”, usually refers to the salary of a white-collar worker on a monthly or yearly basis:

  • White collar: white-collar
  • Annul salary: annual salary

If we want to describe the level of salary, we can say:

  • Good salary: high salary
  • Low salary: low salary

But remember not to say “bad salary“!

Wage is more about the hourly wage for some low-paying jobs:

  • Blue collar: blue-collar
  • Hourly wage: hourly wage

Also, there is an important fixed collocation:

  • Minimum wage: minimum wage
  • A lot of cities in America are trying to push the minimum wage up to 15 dollars an hour. Many cities in the United States are trying to push the minimum hourly wage up to 15 dollars.

Income refers to all your earnings, including salary, investment, etc.:

  • National average income: national average income
  • Household income: household income
  • Annual income: annual income (for tax reporting)

In addition to the basic salary, there is another word called Compensation, which refers to the total amount of salary and benefits:

  • Benefits: benefits, allowances

Speaking of benefits, there is a more colloquial word:

  • Perks: additional benefits (compared to benefits, perks emphasize the “additional” benefits given by the company, such as free gym, afternoon tea, team building, etc.)
